Do I need a new oil pump?
Alright, pretty simple question here (I think).
So I have a 305 and it burns a little oil and leaks a little. Not uncommon especially for it's age (it's a 91). I am usually really good at keeping it full though. Put about a quart/quart and a half in every week.
Here's the problem.
Lately when I start her and look at the oil gauge, it says that my oil pressure is good (right in the middle). However after I have been driving for a good ten minutes, at idle it starts dipping real low. Usually around quarter and sometime a little under.
A few days ago I was driving and it just stalled. Took about five minutes to fire her back up, which is a long time when you're stalled in the middle of the road!!
Is the oil pump going bad? Or is it an alternator thing? Any help would be very much appreciated!

the factory guages leave allot to be desired. you may have nothing wrong with your oil pressure. do you hear any valve train noise when it goes low? you can buy a fairly cheap mechanical guage and install it to see where the pressure lies....i think the oil leaks need to get fixed. that's allot of oil to be loosing.

First, id replace the oil pressure sender for the gauge. They fail a lot. Second, try a mechanical gauge. Honestly though I wouldn't worry much unless there are strange noises, my car when its fully warmed up shows 15-18 and this engine doesn't even have 2000 mi on it. I'm pretty confident the gauge is right. Freaked me out for a bit(I was used to seeing 25-30) but I did some research, and a good rule of thumb is 10 for every 1000 rpms. So if its idling at 15-20, you should be alright. Id be more worried if it didn't shoot up when you give it gas. Mine still almost pegs at 60 even after warmed up.
