Valve Stem Seals
Valve Stem Seals
How do I replace my valve stem seals, and what tools should I use to do so? Sorry, I am not very familiar with this kind of project, but seeing as shops around me want to charge 60 just for the seals alone I figure I may as well attempt to do them on my own.

Re: Valve Stem Seals
Depends on the type of seals. OEM is usually an o-ring type seal that sits in a groove in the valve stem under the spring retainer and they're real cheap. Better seals are umbrella seals that sit down on the valve guide. Technically, only the intake valves need seals.
To change the seals, you need some way to keep the valves up while you compress and remove the valve spring to access the seal. A compressed air fitting into the spark plug hole is most common. You'll also need an on engine valve spring compressor.
If you've never done this type of work before, don't have the tools and are unsure on what to do, having a shop replace them will be a lot cheaper.
