Loud noise

Don't know where to put this on here so..

Well about 3-4 weeks ago my camaro started making a noise while cruising at a decent speed. It doesn't start till its about to shift into 3rd gear and isnt that loud, but when I increase speed it gets louder (sounds like its coming from the front end). I was researching and found that it MIGHT be a wheel bearing(s). Anyone have this problem that could give advice? I don't hear anything when turning its just when increasing speed.

Any help would be appreciated as I drive back n forth to work 30 miles a day n don't want anything bad to happen.

Re: Loud noise

Does the sound get louder if your turn alittle while going down the road? If so, then its a wheel bearing, raise front end & spin, listen, & feel for roughness.

Re: Loud noise

I don't think it gets louder when turning, cause I slow down to where its quiet before I turn. but when i turn the wheel when its off the ground it sounds like its has alil rubbing or some roughness. I can't really explain what kind of sound, but if i had to put it a certain way, humming is about right. Today the noise got alot louder... My car has no muffler or cat and I can hear it over the exhaust & stereo also feel alittle roughness on the brake & gas petal as i go down the road. I'll have to jack the car up tomorrow to feel for roughness cause I did it awhile back when the noise wasnt so loud

Re: Loud noise

If its' a wheel bearing, it'll sound kind of like a howling whine, wind howling during a bad storm...but constant. It'll get louder with speed, and might go away at lower speeds.

With the car off the ground, when spinning the tire, you'll hear/feel what sounds/feels like grit in bearings when you turn it. That's the best way I can discribe it.

My car has an aftermarket exhaust, and I could hear it over that.

Oh, and welcome to TGO!

Re: Loud noise

Yup, take it in and have them look at the wheel bearing. You should be able to tell which side. If you can't, and it's sort of "all around" then it's possibly your pinion bearing in your diff. those get expensive.

Re: Loud noise

Thanks. I'm having both front wheel bearings changed tomorrow morning, If that doesn't fix the problem (which I hope it does) I'll look into the pinion bearing.

Re: Loud noise

You should have been able to tell the general direction. You've got front inner and outer wheel bearings on each front wheel. You've also got wheel bearings on each rear wheel. Then you have the pinion bearing in the differential itself.
