Depends on what the car is going to be used for... Daily driver? If so you wont want anything too big then you want have sufficient vacuum for the power brakes. What heads are you going with? Find out the max lift on the heads you are using then you can go from there.

Re: what cam do I want for 350

What kind of camshaft can it use? What lifters? They go hand in hand. Your 305 has a hydraulic flat tappet cam. A switch to a more modern hydraulic roller cam needs the proper hyd. Roller lifters. Those usually use a "spider" in the lifter valley that keeps the lifter bodies from spinning in their bores.

A possibility is also using a mechanical roller cam and lifters. Might be cheaper than hyd. Roller.

The Comp cam extreme energy line has every type of cam available. You will probably like something in the 224-236 intake duration @ .050" lift. mild compression might like a 224/230 cam or 230/236 duration. High compression, good heads might work well with the 236/242..

Knowing the compression ratio and what cylinder heads/intake manifold, axle gear/torque converter, help with deciding a cam also.

Get specifics!

Re: what cam do I want for 350

It's irresponsible to suggest any cam specs without knowing more about the application. And buying a new solid roller cam and a new set of solid roller lifters, plus new pushrods and new valvesprings, will always cost more than putting together a factory '87-up HR setup. No need or sense in going that crazy with the cam specs just chasing a nasty race-idle sound. Spec the cam right, a few tricks with a Q-Jet and an HEI, add too-large headers, you can get a bad idle with another 50 ft-lbs all through the mid-range, versus just stabbing a huge cam. And huge cams always need more investment in upgrading the supporting hardware.

How much money do you have to work with? What heads are you putting on there and if you're not putting any on then what heads are on it? Let me know exactly what you are using the car for. You said you already have a good daily driver so I am assuming you are using this on the street. Is it going to be on the drag strip at all and if so how often? I'll give you a really good setup with what stall, gears, intake, carb, heads, and cam for what you want to use the car for

Too late, he left without answering those questions because he expected a cookie-cutter answer without knowing the stuff I told him we need from him. You asking him a second time after he's abandoned the thread is like closing the gate after the horse escapes.

Re: what cam do I want for 350

rumbling ur talking like decent lope? that can be had with around 225 duration, and maintain streetability, what gears are u running? what heads do u have to work with? theres nothing shittier than a sbc with a giant cam and **** heads that cant build power past 4500 rpms and run like **** other than driving a geo. too much "rumble" and u have a cam that will spin way too much rpm for a stock bottom end

Re: what cam do I want for 350

I couldn't agree more with smith. If you want really good street heads use these because they are the exact same price as brand new stock vortec heads from gm direct but they have the bigger valves and the right springs for you. Then just go to comp cams website and go to the mechanical flat tappet for SBC 350 and go to extreme energy and choose a cam with a power band (located under cam specs) that starts between idle and 2600. Then I would find an intake manifold that is closest to the cams power band and buy that. Then you need a stall that is roughly 500 higher than the start of the cams power band. For example if it is 2000-6500 go with a 2500 stall. If you do all this you should have a bad *** street motor.

Here are the heads. Really good deal and affordable for a street car.
