lb9 timing problem (LT1 cam) please help!
Ok finally got my tpi running and well this is the issue I'm having ..took her out for a nice drive noticed that the low end torque was gone from a dead stop.. I could not brake the tires loose. . Checked the timing with the tan black wire un plugged and it was at 6* so I advanced the timing to 8* and took her out again this time was a little better but not 100% so on the way back home at cruising speeds she would start jerking and popping out of the exhaust but would stop after pushing the gas .. bumped it to 10* got a little better but same thing ..I got her back home and bumped it to 12 runs better but a slight jerk without the popping is still there should I take advance the timing anymore ? I' think 12 is kinda too much. Any suggestions will help a bunch thanks for taking the time to read my post

Okay, So when you upgraded to the LT1 cam did you shorten the dowel pin any? Im just asking bcuz i know on some cars if you used the LT1 cam from an F body then it would rub the timing chain cover and tear it to hell and back. B body cams, are usually fine for the kinda swap.
Also, IF you DID use the F body cam It has a tiny bit more lift, so some people have had the LOSS of power problem and bottom end instability do to the lack of springs.
The B Body cam has I THINK 191/196 while the F body is a more aggressive came at 202/207. With that being said,
you might be running into some issues on the top end (springs), Not just your timing.
I would replace the springs ANY time a new cam with higher lift is put in.

Yeah the pin was the same size as the stock one that came out .I did change the springs out for some comp cam springs .. I just don't understand why the timing is so high

I am still pretty sure that it is because of the new cam. It is taking in more air then your old one was.
Is it still doing the same thing? And are you 100% sure that it was a B Body cam? What was the exhaust and intake specifications for those Comp Springs you purchased ?
Bcuz if its popping that bad or its lacking bottom end power like you said it could be because the newly springed valves might be set too tight.
Does the car have good power top end wise? Like more power or less then it was originally?

I bumped it to 12 advance d and it ran a lot better and the cam was from an f body before the heads cam and intake swap the tbi could get side ways and power brake but the power is better with the lt1 cam mid range is a big difference and it'll rev great passed 4k the tbi couldn't do that so ill keep going until I get a ping as for the springs I order ed the comp springs recommend I'm the ultimate lt1 cam swap for tbi and had them installed at a machine shop .. the timing is just crazy high will that mess anything up ?

All timing really is In my opinion is Timing advance changes when fuel is injected at a given point of piston position. So if the piston is close to Top Dead Center and you hit it with a big blast of fuel, the fuel is compressed into a solid against the bottom of the cylinder head and what I refer to as timing rattle is the valves being slammed back into the bottom of the head by the compressed fuel. If it starts to rattle under a decent load DO NOT go any further.

You may need better rocker arms too add more support under high r.p.ms. do not advance your timing to much or retard it too much. You can really damage your engine.

Thanks workmanlt1 ... I actually had the timing set to 10, I'm now running it at 12 advance... runs ok but it just feels like it could be faster unless I was expecting more power ? it still wont brake the tires loose unless a clutch dump takes place and wont do a brake stand! it'll start and slowly bog down under power ...
that was my tbi set up all stock .. the tpi is no where near that ...thinking back .. when I first got the tpi running I had a 255 lph pump that burned out but when it ran it was pretty rowdy... but that was for only one run around the block.. when I replaced the pump with a stock tpi pump it kinda never got up the same??
