HELP !! Distributor timing issue

Hi all.............quick question.

I have a 1986 TransAm, but the po swapped engine to a 1992 305 firebird engine. I went to check the timing today, and noticed that the firing order with the wires was wrong on the cap. Reason for running crappy.

I lined up the timing marks to TDC, but rotor was pointing at number 8 on the cap. Should I assume at this point that someone did not put the distributor in correctly? I moved the wires one pole over then where they should be, so that the rotor points to number one. It started up ok, but when I went to use a timing light, the mark was way off. Is this because the distributor is off a tooth?

can I get the timing set keeping it this way, or should I pull up the dist, and move it one tooth back?

Thanks in advance, Rich

Re: HELP !! Distributor timing issue

Hey Rich. Ive ran into this same problem before. But with a 350 swap. But anyways if its (missing a tooth) like u specify then yes, just pull it and replace it? It took me only a few minutes. Then re-time ur engine and enjoy.
