1983 v belt routing issues
Hello all. I am in deed of a little help. Im in the process of putting everything back together so I can drop the engine back in my 83 trans am 305. I cant for the life of me remember the v-belt routing. I searched but couldn't find any clear pictures or descriptions. I know it is a dumb question and I hate having to ask but could someone please help me out with a picture of the set up. I am running my a/c.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: 1983 v belt routing issues
Everywhere I call to check or look on-line tries to give me a small belt for the power steering pump and the same smaller belt for the A/C compressor. They are saying that they both take the same belt and are not sharing a belt. Does one drive off of the water pump and the other the crank? It appears in the pictures I see that there is one large belt that drives both. Maybe the set up is different on the earlier years. It frustrates me that I am having issues with such a dumb topic. Lol.

Thank you very much for your help. Not quite sure why no one calls out for the right belts. I will figure out the right belt size and route the belts like your 82. I appreciate all of the help.

Re: 1983 v belt routing issues
that is strange nobody can ID the belts you need-v8 thirds up untill mid-85 used the same belts as most other 1976-85 SBC with the R4 compressor.'82-85 thirds with the big 15si alternator might use a slightly longer alty belt than those with standard alternators.
Re: 1983 v belt routing issues
They're giving you the belt for the air pump as opposed to the air conditioning (confusing them because they both start with the word "air"). Tell them to put on their glasses, sit up straight in their chair, stub out the Benson & Hedges and pay attention to their work!!
A/C belt is the longest one on the engine in those years and the diagram posted by Paulo is exactly correct. Even my 78 Malibu uses the same belts and routing (except I don't have an air pump in 78).

Re: 1983 v belt routing issues
Sometimes by threading the belt over a different pulley first will allow what seems to be a too short of a belt to be easily installed.
For example, it might be easier to route the belt over the AC compressor first then around the PS pump, crankshaft and then over the water pump.
Also, I find it easier to route all the belts and leave them loose (if possible) and then tighten them once they're all in position. This may help if your PS pump has two grooves which run both the PS pump belt and the one for the AC compressor. Route both belts and then tighten the PS pump belt first.

Here is the belt I ended up getting. It is just what I needed.
