might be coming back to the 3rd gen world.
i just finished looking at an 84 trans am 5 speed with an old school swap done to it. its supposedly its an engine out of a 67 or so chevy impala. im assuming its a 350 and he showed me receipts that the previous owner installed cams and whatnot . the engine idles really lumpy but sounds strong. now my main concern is this : theres a check engine light on in the dash. now of course the cars wiring system has been hacked to death to make this older engine work but im wondering how this will effect my inspection here in ny. i live in dutchess county and dont know if they will fail it because that light is on. im assuming tht its becuse the car no longer has a cat and no o2 sensor. i plan on putting a cat back on it because it looks to have a 3 inch exhaust in to a flowmaster something or other and its way too loud for me. i dont mind a little rumble but i dont want to blow my neighboors windows out when i start the car in the morning. so if i put the cat back in and have an 02 sensor put back in can i hook this back up to the computer somehow and get that light to go off?
thanx in advance guys. i tried doing a search for this but none of the answers i got directly related to my problem.

Those years had feed back carbs, meaning they had a tps & mixture control solenoids. A new o2 sensor won't do a thing b/c the ecm doesn't control the carb (assuming it has a holley/eddy/demon carb). Take the air cleaner off & snap a picture.

Sounds like it's just a visual inspection - put the converter in the exhaust and pull the lamp in the dash and it should pass (as long as they don't check the light comes on and goes off)
A couple of other things... That may be a 283 or 327 engine if it's out of a 67 impala - I think the 350's weren't in there until late in 68 or 69 model year... Also - cheap chrome foreign made pulley is wobbly, air cleaner stud needs to be cut down, and the coolant overflow tank looks empty indicating possible coolant leak or worse slightly blown headgasket...
