Shift cable

Ok guys...What gives here...What did I miss.

Went to back the GTA out of the driveway awhile back and my shift cable on my 700R4 tranny broke. Found a new one on this site and verified the lengths between the two. Identical..Put the new one in by bolting the bracket to the existing removed 2 bolts on the tranny pan. Went to start and found out that Park on my shift console is Reverse on the tranny. The shifter is all the way forward in the console. Reverse on the shift console is nuetral on the tranny which what allowed me to start the engine. It's like one shift point off. From mounting point to mounting point on the cable did not change..What happened here ?

Re: Shift cable

If your new cable is an aftermarket replacement, that's probably the issue. There's been post after post on the boards here lately on how crappy the replacement cables are. If you do a search, several members have posted how-to's on modifying the aftermarket cable to get them working correctly. However, the easiest fix is to buy a good, used original cable. Unfortunately the original GM cables are no longer available new. But getting a used original is the most hassle-free way to getting a good working shift cable in your car again. If you have an original cable on there right now, there is some slight adjustments you can make to it on the end at the trans. I can't remember exactly how you adjust it, but I remember the last time I got under there and looked at mine, it was pretty self-explanatory on how to do it.
