Cylinder walls - carbon buildup

I am changing cylinder heads on my L98, I have a small ring of carbon at the top of my cylinder walls. Should I clean this ring or leave it alone? If I clean it, how do I go about doing so?

Wd40 and a scotch pad, vacuum away the crud.

Marvels mystery oil works well also, as does brake cleaner. Might want to clean pistons as well
