Engine combo advice
HEY GUYS!! this will be my first post on a message board ever anywhere
what i have is a
1992 350 4 bolt roller block 14093638 one piece rear
.30 over
461 heads 2.02 (full port polish) with 3/6 screw studs
it will go in a 1986 z28 with a th350 and a shift kit
i have shorty headers and a single 3" straight back (no cats)
i have an edelbrock 600cfm electric choke carb (1406 i believe)
HEI ignition
i am considering going with the 291thr7 cam kit
( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cc...make/chevrolet )
it will have 1.6 roller rockers will i need to upgrade my studs to 7/16?
i need opinions about this cam and what intake would work well or perhaps a different direction all together im not sure this is my first build and i am trying to carry on DIY any advise would do wonders
thanks guys

Re: Engine combo advice
Any cam selection has to include the following:
http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w..._compatibility
And:
http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Quench
This is for all performance engine builds.Mismatched parts build-ups has a negative end result. So the tune-up starts with the build.

Re: Engine combo advice
What cc are the head chambers? Have they been milled down? Flat tops in a 350 typically see 10.3 to 1 i believe with 64cc heads. Cam you picked is a tad big for the combo but definately will bleed compression out. I would actually try the slightly smaller version of that cam. Smallest thumpr, 283/303 227/241 i believe. Be much better driving and matched to a combo like that, however need to verify dynamic compression as a guide as posted above. Its not the end all be all determining factor for pump gas but its a good starting point. I think it will run ok on 92-93 oct pump tho
If you are doing a retrofit roller be sure you get the timing cover with cam button for that roller cam.

Your not going to have enough head or exhaust or likely converter to use that cam anyways, its going to dissapoint you.
If your trying to build a strong street motor, may I make a few suggestions? And its just my opinion lol.
Assuming the block itself is untouched and you have a "typical" flat top it should come in around 10.1 if you use felpro pn#q1142026
The quench isn't perfect at 0.050 but its not terrible either. You will need good fuel. 92+
Skip the thumper, if you wanna stick with off the shelf comp cams, try the XR276, your heads aernt going to flow big numbers up high anyways.
Standard edelbrock performer RPM intake
Holley 750 DP
3000 stall
373 gear.
If the heads have had some work done this combo is going to fly. And be nice on the street as well.

Re: Engine combo advice
The heads as far as I can tell are stock chamber I would assume 64cc they have been NICELY ported and polished and opened up a considerable amount my stall is still open to consoderation seeing as I have not bought one at this time
@orr89 dobu have a cam grind# for that ?
The block is a factory roller
Heads are tapped and screwed and IMO a really nice set I have the bottom end and the carb already id lketo find a combo that will really preform on the street ... I love bottom end honestly top end is at the bottom of my list only because this car will NEVER see the track so ... 70 will be its top speed .... like I said im completely open to advice and opinions not many people my age are doing this so im all ears

Re: Engine combo advice
I agree with the post above, a good dual plane and little bigger carb and smaller cam like one of the xe grinds will do alittle better for street duty. Xe276 hyd roller is a nice grind for a 350
