engine dies

I am having a problem with my 82 TA ,305 HEI dist.quadrajet.

I can be driving along fine and then it will just quit running and will not restart right away, sometimes not for hours. I have tried jump starting it when it quits and that is no help.

what can I test or is this something thats common and there's no need to test just replace something now.

Re: engine dies

That sounds like something ignition-related. Flaky module or coil being the usual suspects.

You can rule out fuel issues if the next time it happens you have a can of starting fluid in the car. Give a shot in the carb and immediately try to start it. If it fires up for a second and dies again, you have fuel-related issues. If it doesn't, it's ignition.

Re: engine dies

Its been awhile since I have replaced all the ignition parts but wouldn't it run rough or idle rough if wires or plugs were bad?

Is there anyway to test the module and coil ?

If the module is going out would it act this way?
I guess same for the coil,I mean is this a common symptom ?

Re: engine dies

I wouldn't call it a common symptom, but it happens. Electronic parts hate heat. Sometimes they have issues when hot that don't crop up when they are cold. Modules and coils can be bench tested with the right equipment, but I've seen as many times as not that they test good but are still bad in an actual running engine.
