project begins

bought an 84 berlinetta for real cheap. its got some issues but nothing I cant handle.

I have not done much with these older cars so please forgive my ignorance. I am fairly mechanically inclined.

Down the road, probably this coming winter I want to turbo this car keep in mind that this engine will only be in the car untill I cause engine damage and swap in a 350

So... here we go, the gauge cluster in this car has stopped working. it was the digital cluster. I am thinking I will remove the original cluster and put an aluminium plate in there and put in the gauges I want. this being said is it going to create any other problems? I am assuming when that goes for a ride I will loose my cruise and wipers and stuff so will have to put the stuff I can retain on toggle switches.

will I be able to keep the cruise control?

also she has some carb issues. I know I could get them figured out with a good cleaning and some rebuild gaskets but looking into the future I might be farther ahead to put on a holley or something I can set up for a blow through turbo system and then get a vacuum advance distributor what do you think?

thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Re: project begins

Fortunately, the gagues are pretty much a after-thought in the 3rd gen. I think there is a VSS built into the speedometer that the ECM references, but other than that, the gagues are all run off separate circuits than the ECM uses (and if you're going to ditch the ECM and computer controls completely for an "old school" non-computer controlled carb engine, who cares what the ECM thinks anyway?)

Cruise control..... I don't remember if it's integrated with the ECM in 1984. Don't know. Maybe somebody else could chime in here and let you know if the curise contol can still work without the factory gagues (or ECM) functional.

Swapping from computer controlled QJet and HEI distributor is easy enough to do. There's an article in the tech section, but on your car it's pretty much as easy as replacing the cc-HEI distributor with an earlier non-computer-controlled HEI and plopping on your aftermarket carb of choice. The computer controlled carb/distributor system works well if you get it sorted out (and the wiring hasn't been all hacked up and mutilated), but it'll never handle big cams or anything like a blow-through forced induction setup.

Re: project begins

so far the wiring seems decent but for what im going to do with it and what I can get a used holley and dist for I think I should ditch the electronics and work on getting it running mint.

that pretty well solves that thanks. I will maybe post up some pictures when I get going.

another thing. there is a hose above the bottom rad hose that just has a piece of rubber hose with a plug in it that is zip tied up out of the way. does anyone know what thats supposed to go to??

I'm sure someone will have something negative to say about this but w/e.

can someone point me in the direction of a thread that shows what I need to remove to get rid of all my emissions junk I am not exactly sure what all the stuff coming off those vaccumm lines is. like all those little lines that go to coolant lines and stuff
