86 Z28 Need advice to flush engine.

I just bought a 1986 Z28, looking to restore it. The car runs good but recently changed the valve cover gaskets and when I pulled them off I was not very happy with what I saw. Lots of oil gunk build up anyone got any advice on flushing the engine?

Change the oil filter. Fill it with 1 qt of auto trans fluid.

Keep an eye on the oil; like, every hour or so of running. Be prepared to change it within 500 miles because it will eat that gunk and suspend it in the oil turning it black and gooey. Get it out when it does that. Keep changing it as it builds up gunk. Should last progressively longer each time, probably will be 2000 miles or more on the 3rd go-round.

Keep doing it until the oil quits getting like that; at which point, the interior of the motor will be spotless. Pop the VC again and you probably won't recognize it.

that's pretty tricky, so drain all the oil and replace with 1 qt of tranny fluid? or put it normal amount of oil minus 1 qt then ad the transmission fluid?

Not sure how this is "tricky"?

Buy a filter and a qt of ATF. Set the new filter upright in the position it will go in when installed. Pour ATF into the center of it slowly, until it starts to emerge from the holes around the outside. Remove old filter. Install new filled filter.

Leave the old oil in there the first time; not a lot of sense in spending money to change it and then immediately throwing away brand-new oil, just because it's full of goop, if you don't have to.

The ATF will dissolve the gunk into the oil. That's the only place it can possibly go, of course; can't just make it disappear as if by magic. Unfortunately. It will dissolve SO MUCH of it, SO FAST, that the oil will rapidly become thick and black with it. Once it does so, THEN change it. (not, at the beginning if the procedure) Put in a qt of ATF and 4 qts or whatever of oil. Keep doing that until the oil quits getting black and gunky, indicating that all the schmutz has been dissolved.
