vss wiring for electric speedo.
vss wiring for electric speedo.
vss from trans (purple yellow) to c100 pin d4 and e4 to connect to
Purp yellow on buffer box. I dunno why speedo won't work there is contenutity all the way to the vss purple yellow wires.
87 v6 to lg4 swap. Cable v8 trans swapped vss from v6 trans. All my electrical is working in the car except my speedo
.
Anyone have any ideas ?

Re: vss wiring for electric speedo.
BTW - If the original speedo had a cable, you'll still need one to make it work. The VSS signal generator hanging off the back of some Camaro speedos was only to signal the ECM and cruise. The speedo in those wasn't electrically operated. If that's your case, you may need to swap in a cluster from a later Camaro. IIRC, '89 and later had electric speedos.

85 is the last year for the mechanical speedo in the firebird.
You can test the VSS to make sure it is sending a signal by using a volt meter in AC mode. It should produce voltage when you spin the VSS by hand or with a drill.
Also you can test the connection between the buffer box and the speedo. It is pin 14 on the bottom connector of the gauge cluster.

You can also technically hook the vss up directly to the gauge pin 14 to make sure the gauge works properly. Just hook one wire to ground and the other to the wire that goes to the gauge. If the VSS and gauge both work then you know the buffer box is bad.

Hoping someone can answer this.. picked up a low mileage 89 trans am and the odometer does not work but speedo does.. I noticed the cover under the passenger compartment was ajar is there any wiring issues that could cause that symptom to occur..
