Dreaded VSS

ive been doing quite a bit of searching and im still a bit confused on this whole thing. i blew up my original t-5 in my 87 camaro, with the cable driven speedo, and i baught one from an 87 firebird with the electric speedo. now am i correct in saying the only way to get my speedo to work is to get a hold of the VSS unit, or buy one of those rather expensive aftermarket pieces?

im really dreading this, and all i want is my car up and running! im to the point of saying screw the speedo until winter when i'd like to replace all the gauges anyway. any help is GREATLY appreciated!

You should have the VSS box on the rear of your current speedo cluster. My memory's a bit foggy, but it seems that you should be able to plug your speedo cable into the tranny, though you may need to replace the sleeve. PM jmd on this board. He'll give you the staight stuff if someone else doesn't jump in.

i dont have the vss, at least im pretty sure i dont. the original tranny, the one i blew up, was a cable driven. the one i baught is the one with the electronic drive, and the junk yard where i got the tranny did not grab the VSS control from the firebird i got my trans out of.

The VSS on your 87 Camaro is mounted on the rear of the gauge cluster, not the transmission, so unless you've swapped the cluster, it's there. As I say, I'm a bit foggy on this point, but I believe you should be able to insert a new sleeve and speedo gear in the hole where the VSS was on the donor transmission, and screw your speedo cable in just as it was on your old tranny. If this is incorrect, someone step in.

Note the little yellow box (VSS) in the following link:

if you still have your other tranny, just switch the stuff over from it. then screw your cable in like normal. you will need the speedo housing, drive, and driven gears plus the mounting clips for them from your other transmission.
