Heatercore w/ No Diverter Valve Affecting A/C?

OK so quick question for everyone here who knows about heating and air conditioning on our cars.

When the HVAC controls are set to recirculate, is the air blowing through the vents actually being routed THROUGH the heatercore?

The reason I am asking is I had to build my own air conditioning from scratch. I pulled a vacuum on the system and charged it with 40oz of r134a. I adjusted the compressor cycle switch by 5psi and used a non-stock orifice tube. Current air coming out of the vents is about 30 degrees below ambient HOWEVER the heater control valve has been gone from my car for years so I am wondering is the cold air going through the evaporator actually being blown over the hot heatercore before exiting the vents?

I bought a 3/4" shutoff valve from lowes today but haven't put it on yet. Want to know if there's even a point to doing so.
