89 camaro rs 305 tbi oil pressure drop
Hey guys im a big fan of this forum and have been using it for advice over the past 5 years ive owned my 3rd gen and i love the way my car drives, feels, even the old smell. I love the looks i get and the fact that im not like every other 19 year old around here driving a 90s civic...
For starters i have an 89 camaro rs with a 305 tbi ohv and a 700r4 trans.
as far as mods i have flushed everything had everything above the crank machined and new gaskets put back on when i got it. since then ive replaced the ignition, the exhaust system, paint, sway bar end links, tires and wheels, tranny filter and fluids, all motor fluids and filters as well as replaced stock exhaust with shorty hooker headers into a custom 4 inch collector back into 3" all the way to the 40 series and a 4 inch tip. i removed the ac and have replaced the compressor with a free flowing bearing from oreillys. as well as i have removed the smog pump.
Recently i had run 50 psi oil pressure driving down the road healthy all of the time but its been getting warmer out and i was climbing the hill doin 60 with 50 psi and when i slowed down to a stop for the traffic jam my oil pressure hit 0 still and then it held maybe 25 driving. since then i have replaced the pressure sending unit, the oil filter, oil, and i bought an oil pump. Even today it runs a little stronger since i removed the compressor for the extra drag loss but it still is far too low to make me smile. This is my baby and id rather park it in the grass and let it sit than sell it so i was wondering what ideas you guys have? my oil pressure had been fine till then.
Everywhere i look its crank bearings and im not looking forward to replacing the motor for the price of another third gen..so i could you guys who have replaced the pump without pulling the motor if it is possible 1 with only a jack and no lift cuz the manual asks for blocks of wood if i use the oil pan as the lifting point how long does this take for someone who has their head rapped around what they are going to be doing? and 2 how many of you had oil pump failures here? is it a possibility? i have NO crank noise no nothing different at all, it runs perfectly fine and at stop it doesnt bog or gargle or die or anything. its tempermental but i think thats from the exhaust.. thank you for your time guys and i appreciate any advice experienced third gen owners have on this.

Re: 89 camaro rs 305 tbi oil pressure drop
Before you panic, use a mechanical pressure gauge to verify the reading. They're more trustworthy than an electric sender. The sender should only be used to alert you to a *possible* problem, but it's not totally reliable.
You might also want to test the dashboard gauge. To do that, you can unplug the sender and plug in a known resistor in it's place. Some resistance would correspond to some amount of pressure, but I don't know the scale, maybe that info is on here somewhere.
