do i need these things?

so i'm pretty much stock all the way around. and i want to do something about it. first of all, i want to put in a new intake manifold and air cleaner. but the thing is, the air cleaner is connected to my valve covers.

i was curious if i even need these hoses, and if so, what do i need to do with them if i swap it out for an aftermarket piece?

also, the cleaner is connected to the ram air thing. that is also connected to a couple thing and i'm just unsure if i can get rid of these things.

As long as you don't have a visual inspection as part of an emissions testing program, you can get rid of all that stuff and put on whatever air cleaner you want.

The large hose connected to the valve covers is a breather. You will simply need to get a push in breather for the valve cover.

That is the only hose I am aware of that would be connected to your air cleaner. The second hose I can see in my mind is the PCV, which is actually attached to your carb/throttle body.

I tried getting rid of that breather line to the air cleaner and pcv on mine and popped in a couple (passive) breathers and it caused me a massive oil leak from im guessing pressure build up. Oil was leaking from everywhere underside like the pan gasket/front and rear main seals. reconnected the old stuff and and no more leaks. Sooo, it may not be a good idea to dissconnect that stuff.

Your probably safe with using a push in breather, but yea, you can't get rid of the PCV. I should have been clear in that.

Re: do i need these things?

okay so i can get rid of the bigger of the two hoses..

what about the ram air housing? it's got what looks like a hose that runs vertically down into the engine(it's barely even connected). what's the point of that hose?

Typical reason is to get cooler air into the engine;
a plain air cleaner will allow hot air from the engine bay to be sucked in and performance will suffer

You can but depending on age of the engine you may end up with the pan contents all over your rocker covers

+ PCV was installed for a reason ;
to purge all the nasties from inside the engine that can cause sludge , etc

Yeah, you can get rid of your PCV, if you want to get rid of your engine too, because you'll destroy it.
