Vortec Motor Swap???
I am thinking about buying a 350 vortec motor for my 1986 camaro that currently has a l34 (carb motor) and i have seen a few vortec motors and most go for around $500 and under and some come with harness and computer and some do not.
So I was wondering what would i have to do to swap in a vortec motor and a few more questions lol.
1. If i wanted to keep it fuel injected does the computer and everything controll that and i just plug up the harness when installin it, or would there be alot of work like cutting wires, relays, and what not?
2. How would i swap it to make my 650 holley carb and performer rpm intake work on the vortec motor?
3. What do i need with the vortec motor if i go the carb route, other then a distributor with a vacum advance on it?
THANKS

Re: Vortec Motor Swap???
Since you DON'T have a "L34", whatever that would be if it existed, but instead have a LG4, I'll speak to that starting point instead.
1. Yes there would be a lot of work; not least, the fuel system. That's a kinda crappy FI system anyway, if you hang out on the truck boards you'll see why. Which is NOT the same as saying "go carb"; only, if you want FI, that's not the one. It's probably little better than TPI, and even more trouble when it decides to take a dump on you. It's certainly as mod-hostile as TPI.
2. Wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, etc. Pretty much all the standard ways of swapping things would apply.
3. A Vortec intake manifold. And of course, to get rid of the LG4 exhaust, if that's what's still in the car.

Re: Vortec Motor Swap???
Converting to the factory vortec fuel injection is pointless. The intake manifold sucks, not much aftermarket support unless you switch to a marine style intake. Not to mention you cant get better injectors.

Oh and I am not going to be modding the vortec motor any so long as it's more powerfull then l98 motors are then it's all i need lol. So if i buy a complete vortec motor from oil pan to the plastic cover on top of motor, and all the wires for it, what will be hard to install it, like are there any wires i would have trouble with or do i just put the computer under my ash an run the wires to the injectors and what not, and et a in tank fuel pump and it's pretty much done rite?

Unless your car has the same dimensions as that truck, you're probably going to be modding the harness. Mainly lengthening the wires.

Re: Vortec Motor Swap???
which fuel injection setup do you have?
you can get TPI and TBI intakes for the vortec heads and pretty much just drop it in by only swapping that.

Re: Vortec Motor Swap???
He doesn't
He has a carb engine so given his limited knowledge of these things ( read some of his other posts )
it would be more practical ( & cheaper ) for him to just put a carb intake on any Vortec engine he buys and call it a day

Re: Vortec Motor Swap???
why cant i use my lg4 exhuast with the vortec motor?
Certainly won't reach anything like its full potential, even in totally stock trim. Thread Starter

The exhuast on the camaro wasnt stock, and it had headers and 2.5in exhuast, but i traded the camaro for a 454 big block truck so it doesnt matter anymore lol
