Weird thumping type feeling

I have a 1986 Z28 with a T5 tranny and 373 limited slip rear. I just got it through inspection and one of the items that were bad was the rear sway bar connectors, they were broke. So they were replaced and all is good.
When I drive the car and bang through the gears, it feels like the rear passenger side tire is breaking loose, but I do not believe that is it. It makes a were loud thumping type feeling and sound. Only seems to happen as I am getting on it but not real hard. I feel like an AMMCO commercial trying to describe a bad tranny sound, but not sure how to explain it. I also notice that when I really get on it, the gear shift seems to rise and fall during acceleration and decel. I was thinking maybe a broken tranny mount but according to the inspection station, that is fine. This maybe be normal but I do not think so. Any ideas?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Weird thumping type feeling

Not sure how, or why, an inspection station would or even could "check" that; but, since these cars are notorious for breaking the trans mount, and they're DIRT CHEEEEP and so EEEEEZY to replace (takes longer to put the car on stands and crawl under it than it does to do the actual work), I'd suggest, this is one of those relatively rare times when it makes more sense to just swap it out and be done with it, than to puzzle over it. Especially since, virtually THE ONLY thing that can result in the shifter being able to move, is the transmission that it's bolted to, moving; and virtually THE ONLY thing that can allow that, is a broken mount.

See my signature for advice on that matter.

Change that out and come back and tell us if the shifter stays still, and if it still has the thump, then we can go to work on that.

Re: Weird thumping type feeling

Replace it with something decent like a Energy Suspension unit or the like. The over the counter parts house units are crap. I went through 3 of them within a few months. The Energy Suspension unit I've had on for years with no issue. Saves time and money in the long run.

I agree. Probably the trans mount. I found out mine was busted at the track. Every time the trans shifted I'd get a very loud "thump." Cheap and easy to fix.

Yep, tranny mount was completely busted. I did use a the better mount. Now no thump and the shifter stays in place. Thanks all

Now to find a very cheap car lift for my garage, its weird but after all these years, my belly has a had time getting underneath these. I don not remember that problem back inthe 70's. Oh I know, the cars did not sit as low <wink>
