Motor thats been sitting
Motor thats been sitting
Hey guys, I just got my hands on an 82 ta roller. Was originally a 4spd manual, and still has the pedal assembly.
I have a mildly built 350 thats been sitting on an engine stand for a few years thats together with the exception of the valve train. I built the motor in highschool but never put it in anything. It has never been fired up since the rebuild. What do I need to do to get that motor ready to be dropped in? The bearings, rings, and gaskets were all new but I'm figuring the motor might need a cleaning? As of last summer the motor would still turn over freely.

Re: Motor thats been sitting
Depends on when highschool was, how the engine was built and how it's been stored.
If for example highschool ended in 2011 and the motor has been enclosed in a plastic garbage bag, and all the exposed metal surfaces that touch moving parts (le.g. lifter bores) were well greased with white lithium or some such, it needs nothing.
If on the other hand highschool ended in 1987 and the motor has been sitting out in the back yard uncovered since then, well .... the situation will be a bit different.
I'm guessing the real deal lies somewhere in between?
Details matter.

The motors been sitting since june of 2009 and its been in my (moist) Garage wrapped in a bag but by no means sealed. The intention when I stored it was to have a roller within a few weeks, not years.

Probably fine then; as long as the afore-mentioned moving parts surfaces are clean and rust-free. Although even if a bit of rust has accumulated on cyl walls or lifter bores, a towel and some ATF will probably bust it right off of there.
