can I put a factory roller-cam in here,,pics
This engine is a targetMaster 350 that is in the RS i just bought.
Can I go to the pick-n-pull yard and get some lifters and spider and plunk it into this engine? If so; what kind of lifters are best, or are they all the same?
I can buy a cam from someone online for cheap. Like an LT-1 cam or something that someone swapped out for a better one. Or; just go ahead and spend the money on a nice cam. This engine seems ok; but, I dont know "anything" about it. Just looking to "cheap-out" until I save up enough for some nice heads. If the engine will accept a factory roller, then it is probably a one piece rear seal engine,,,and I can pull it and freshen it up.
thank you
mike

It is a factory roller block BUT that motor has a flat tappet camshaft/valvetrain in it.
To convert to a roller cam you will need the spider hold down plate, lifter "dog bone" retainers, roller lifters, cam retainer plate and the proper valve springs... expect to spend $210 + springs and cam (anywhere from an additional $300-600).

Yes
the flats at the top of the bores for the dog bones on the roller lifters are machined and the raised bosses are threaded for the lifter hold down spider.
If using a OEM (vs retro fit style) cam only thing to check is whether the 2 holes are drilled at the front of the block for OE cam retainer plate.
If you run a retro roller cam you don't need the cam retainer plate and can use a non roller timing set

Rough estimate, if you shop around you can save up to 20%.
Lifters $135:

Lifter installation kit $81:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-150121
Pushrods vary greatly in price. Aftermarket roller cam is usually $300. Supporting parts for cam (springs/retainers/locks) can go anywhere from $100-400.

Thanks guys for your help. I have access to a low mile 305Tbi camaro that I can rob lifters and dogbonez and hold down plate from.
Bet I can find a used lt1 cam for not so much money on craigsList.
Very cheap upgrade until I can get better heads. I'm not looking for big numbers,,,just bang for the buck.
thanks
mike

might as well get a good cam right away, and put it in at the same time you swap better heads on.
