code 24
yday after installing http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/7587 the cooling fan stopped and code 24, vss, came on. its a 92 Camaro tbi wit a swapped nwc t5.
before the 700r4 was swapped out, no code 24, speedo worked as it should. cooling fan worked.
swapped t5 with no vss, ofc codes popped, but cooling fan still worked, speedo gauge stayed at zero.
few months later speedo gauge went to 30 and stayed at 30, no vss and cooling fan still worked.
yday speedo still at 30, but when going 30 it jumps to 60. will bounce a lot between 30-60. cooling fan no longer works (fan/relay works but its not receiving a kick on signal) nearly melted my engine bc the fan wasn't getting a turn on signal.
ideas? ecm seems to be working just fine, car runs great. buffer box worked before this. tpi says its not their vss, since its a magnet spinning. speedo gears are in there and not broken.

Re: code 24
I think you should give dakota digital a call and ask them about the sgi-1. The ppm seem higher than what it should be even going through the buffer. The ecm is also seeing a huge fluctuation causing the code 24 to throw. The cooling fan not turning on is a separate issue. Try grounding the sensor between cylinder 6&8 the cooling fan should kick on. If it does the sender is bad. if it doesn't time to start checking the Relay power and grounds.

Re: code 24
the sender is new, but to check how do I ground out a single wire sensor? and so it just happens to be that I plug the new vss in and the fan stops working? but I noticed the odometer works perfectly... but a code 24 is still being thrown and the speedo is all wacky. so trolling around on the web I found could be the buffer box? what are the chances of that, thinking extremely good but where can I find one?

Re: code 24
If you want a buffer I will send you one for $10 ,On tpi if the ecm sees a vss higher than 35mph it will shut the fan off unless needed. On tbi it is all done through the cylinder head switch. disconnect the wire going to the switch and ground it and see if the fan goes on.

Re: code 24
so I unplug the wire and grounded the wire, with the car running, and the fan came on so I guess its the sensor, which is funny bc its less then 90 days old. but its lifetime warrenty so ill be doing that soon.

Isn't that the wrong speed sensor for TBI?

Re: code 24
that's what I thought, but according to the fair amount of ppl it is. even the tpi parts guys are telling me its the correct one. the ecm uses a 4k ppm signal, and the buffer box splits the signal, that's how it has been explained to me anywas.

Re: code 24
ok so the yellow box is the one I bought, the black box is the one on my car. this whole code 24 is pissing me off.
edit: I found the black box on its own bracket next to the ecm.

being a '92 TBI the buffer box has to be there. On the right side under the dash. Look along the ledge that holds the rear-ward side of the hush panel. May need to lie on your back and look up under the dash.

Re: code 24
Found the box, replaced the box, still code 24. Resat the speedo (moved the needle back to 0) 1st thing it did when i statted the car it shot right to 30 and is staying put. I guess i asked the wrong question, the ecm requires 4k ppm but what does the buffer box require is what i apperently should be asking.

Re: code 24
The buffer gets a 2k ppm magnetic pulse, the buffer converts the magnetic pulse to optical
signal 4k ppm optical to the speedometer and 2k ppm optical to the ecm.
signal 4k ppm optical to the speedometer and 2k ppm optical to the ecm.

Re: code 24
Don't order the 2k ppm, it is optical and is designed to wire directly to the ecm and bypass the buffer. Idk what the issue is if a sgi-5 would cure it or if its the speedometer itself. But with the code 24 popping I would think its emi or loss of signal to the buffer or emi.

Re: code 24
Emi? Whats that?
And i dont see how the signal isnt making it to the box no wires where cut and i cleaned the plug.
Is it possable that the bullet thing the vss connects to is messed up? Seems simple and had to break though. And no the gears arent broken.

Re: code 24
It is possible the vss is not spinning. Emi is electromagnetic interference

Re: code 24
And where might this emi be? And could that be the cause?
As for the vss not spinning suppose i could take that off start the car and spin it by hand to see if thats working right?

You might be able to turn the key to the on position and chuck the vss drive in a drill.

Re: code 24
Hmm just need a volt meter figures. Emi i get what you mean now i think. All the wires are on tightly made sure of that. Dont now what else could cause emi on a car.

Re: code 24
If its emi what if i run new wire directly to the bufferbox from the vss? Like though the trans tunnel and under the carpet... think that would do the trick?
