on the right track?

I have a 91v6 car that I am putting a 355v8 in and I have several questions:

1. I am assuming that I have to take the control arms completely off to remove and replace the v6 coil springs with the v8? is this true or can I avoid removing them (control arms) and still get the small springs out and the put the big ones in?
2. If I have to remove the control arms am ji correct in assuming that I also should go ahead and remove/replace the inner/outer tie rod ends, original struts and pack wheel bearings?
3. I also want to replace the fuel pump which would be best to do while I have the exhaust out since the oem exhaust will not work with my headers and I was able to salvage my entire exhaust from my v8 car. is it prudent to go ahead and replace the shocks, universal joints, regrease the rear and pack the wheel bearings?
4. how do I attach a TACH in the car without messing up this MINT dash pad? and I do mean mint!
5. how much is it to get the old bushings pressed out and new ones pressed in and new ball joints pressed into the control arms IF I have to remove them?

Re: on the right track?

  1. Not "necessary", but SURE IS eeezier to remove them completely. And just think... NOT ONLY does it make it eeeezier to do that, BUT ALSO to change out the motor mounts, and to refresh the bushings & ball joints.
  2. I'd think so; and the center link and the idler arm. That way, everything you touch, is like new again.
  3. Shocks yes; only takes like 5 minutes more to undo the top of them as well. U-joints, might as well, since the drive shaft will be out already anyway. No wheel bearings to pack back there. Always a good idea to change the rear end fluid, especially since your new motor is likely to stress it a bit more than that other one.
  4. You don't have to disturb the dash pad to change out the cluster.
  5. "How much" what?

Re: on the right track?

4. Change out cluster or just add aftermarket tach from advance (sunpro) or something
5. How much does a machine shop charge to press bushng and ball joints out and new ones back in?

Re: on the right track?

When I had my control arm bushings pressed out/in, it cost me $80 just for the labor since I provided the bushings. That was after 3 shops told me no, a machine shop said they would do it.

Re: on the right track?

Cost me $50 and 2 days at Monro to have my front bushings and ball joints pressed out. Replace ALL of the bushings in the ENTIRE suspension, front and back, if you're not replacing the rear LCAs.

You're wasting money on replacing the tie rods if they're not worn.

Yes, you just replace the instrument cluster.

If you're going to be doing anything with the rear axle, now would be a good time to do a brake upgrade or rebuild.

Some V8 and V6 cars had the same springs... Depending on options.

I thought it would be best to replace since it seems that I would have to take them off to get the control arm bolts out.

what rpo codes would I be looking for or will it matter b/c I have to take the arms off to move the motor mounts anyway?

Re: on the right track?

You can pretty easily pop tie rods out without damaging them and reuse them. Even if you did have to replace, you would only have to redo the outers since they connect to the knuckle, the inners attach to the centerlink.

If you have to take the springs off, just get new ones. Chances of finding used springs that are in good shape on a 25 yr old car........... just replace them with new ones.

Re: on the right track?

you can get the front springs out by un-popping the ball joint from the spindle, and undoing the sway bare endlinks, the controll arm will be able to swing down.

MAKE SURE THE CONTROL ARM IS SUPPORTED BY A JACK THE WHOLE TIME SO THE SPRING DOESN'T EXPLOSIVELY EXPAND.

takes me 40mins tops for the whole car as long as the bolts and stuff arent rusted and come apart easily
