whats it worth, big block & turbo?

so this guy in my neighborhood has this big block thats been sitting under a shed for over a year. he sells all kind of stuff. he wasnt there today but i took a few pics just to look up the casting number. the motor looks to be complete pan to carb. theres also a tranny, headers, etc. laying next to it. then i noticed a turbo laying 2 feet away. looks like somebodys abandon project?
the casting number tells me its a 66-67, 2-bolt, 396.
i know nothing about turbos, but if its something you guys think i should pick up, let me know.

so the question is, what's it worth? should i even bother?

The turbo is a TP-38 off a powerstroke. 94-97 by the flange. It is probably a better match for a 305 than anything bigger. I'd say 150 tops and even then you probably paid too much. The 396 on the other hand the value could be damn near anything from scrap to a few grand depending on the work done and condition.

Any engine I can't hear run I treat as basically a core, because you don't know what you are really getting, and price accordingly.

w/Zane

396 arent worth much nobody wants them.
Took me a yr to sell mine.

They are capable with a good head of making some real good power though even being a "small" big block. You just spin them up a little bit. If its a 65 take agood look at the cam some havea groove (needed) in it. Replace with similar or youll be sorry lol. 2 bolt BB are plenty stout!

Most or all 396 engine had forged cranks. The problem you have is pistons, not many made these days and much more expensive than 454 pistons. I'm building a 500 plus BBC two bolt mains, but installing studs.

Go find a bus or motor home chassis in a bone yard. Get the 454 and look for a drum brake on the back if the th400, that's actually a th475 with straight cut gears....I know, I have two of em!
