Good cam xe268h?

Hi guys I am a recent member this is my first post. I've owned my 3rd Gen 92 Camaro RS for 10 years since I was 17 and my 81 2nd gen for 3 years. I need some help on whether I'm making a good cam choice? Here are the specs. Sbc 400 holley 750 dp performer rpm intake, 1971 lt1 heads port matched. TH400 stock converter b&m transpak 3.23 gears, hedman full length headers into 2.5 true dual through flowmaster mufflers, 8.5:1. My cam choice is comp cams xe268h .477in .480ex 268dur. What do u think good choice or not. Thanks for your time.

Re: Good cam xe268h?

It's going to be pretty sluggish with that low CR, stock TC, 2.48 1st gear, 3.23 rear.
You must have some combination of large chambers, thick gasket, large deck clearance, or ??? to come up with such a low CR. If it's truly 8.5 CR, I'd go with at most a 262-ish XE cam so it's not handicapped so bad at low rpms.

The 8.5:1 is a low estimation i made it has 76cc chambers 0.45 gasket and pretty much stock 1971 bottom end i do plan to eventually go with a 2000 stall and maybe have my heads milled down to 72cc. I considered the 262 but i think the 268 will work well with future upgrades its powrer band is 1800-5800 or 6000? Thank u for your opions and time

Re: Good cam xe268h?

That quoted power band is only valid if everything else is right for the cam.
If it's an undecked shortblock, the pistons are probably at LEAST .020" in the hole; no sense in using a .045" gasket. I'd shoot for something more like .025"
Doing that and reducing chamber volume will help since you obviously want to run that cam.
Good luck!

My future plans is a 700r4 with 2000 stall and a 4.11 posi 10 bolt by this summer just workin on talkin my buddy out of it without lossing my arm and leg. He wants 300 for rear and 150 for trans i offered 350 for both.
I have three seats of cast iron heads i could use the 71 lt1 heads came on it when i bought 76cc 2.02 1.60 , 598 400 heads 76cc 1.94 1.60, 461 fulie vette heads 64cc 2.02 1.60 wich need machined for steam holes and would have to remount the ps pump and alt. Im trying my best to keep it on a cheap budget cant afford aftermarket heads or i would. Again thanks everyone for time and thoughts.

P.s this is for my 81 sorry i know im on the third gen site but i figured this could apply to both.

Yeah im pretty stuck on that cam lol. I have thought about the xe 262 but like i said earlier i think the 268 will go with the mods im planning. I have been doing alot of research on it and have tried to match it up with the rest of my parts. But i greatly thank u for ur time and thought. Also have found a 4.166, 0.15 fel-pro gasket and have been thinking of exchange the one i got for it. I havnt installed it yet waitin on the cam to put it all back together. Its the last piece of the puzzle. Lol
