87 Firebird Help
87 Firebird Help
Hi new here.
I bought an 87 Firebird and needs some fixing up.
Anyway there are somethings I'm not sure what they are, what they connected to, if its need or if wired right.
A) What is this and what is for? Do I need it?
B & C) What do these connect to ?
D) Coming out of the radiator. Not sure where it was suppose to connect to.
It been closed off.
E)two wires coming out the cap and someone "attached" them to that connector , with the black tape). That connector has a red and yellow wire coming out of it. How should this be wired correctly ?
Also the firebird doesn't have a Heater Control Valve. Do I need one ? I do want to put A/C back in someday. Some one removed the compressor , lines and condenser.
I appreciate the help.
Thanks.

Doesn't necessarily "have to" have a heater control valve; most cars don't.
E is indeed the ignition coil connector. It would go to the ignition coil if only you had the right distributor in there. That dist is an older model. Definitely been some swappage going on. That green wire hack-job is somebody's idea of how to hook up the ignition. The pink wire is 12V to the coil; the white wire is the tach.
D is a heater hose; the cold side. There are 2 options for where to hook the cold hose from the core; either the place where D is now blocking off, or the top of the water pump, where it's hooked to. Either will work perfectly fine. The hot side is hooked to the intake manifold like it belongs. Wouldn't hurt to find something a bit ... less .... sodomite, to replace D with, though.
A B & C are all concerned with the air injection system, which has been hacked off of the motor.

I see.
So the ignition coil connector goes to the ignition coil and there is wires from the coil to the distributor then ?
On "E" what's the best way it "fix it", or should I just leave it? The car did start.
On "D" if I put it on top of the water pump, what do I do about the hose thats there now? Just trying to figure out how things are supposed to be connected.
Since I don't have the air injection system, it not something to worry about then right?
I should say it has a 305 in it, if that makes any difference.
Are there any pic's of proper connections for "E" and "D"?
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

Re: 87 Firebird Help
For the ignition wiring, you could either get the right dist & coil, which are the same on all the carb and FI V8s from 87 through 95, and just plug it in like it belongs; or, put the correct connectors onto the car's wiring for the older dist that's in there now. I'd personally prefer option 1 but that's just me.
For the heater hose, it's already connected to the top of the water pump. No need to connect anything any differently. Alternatively you could unscrew the hose nipple from out of the WP, put a pipe plug in there to block it off neatly, and move the heater hose to the rad. I can't recall for sure where it went in 87, that was right about the time they were changing it. Go for whichever way makes it neater and more orderly and looks less like .... the way it does now.
Yes since the air injection system has been hacked off, you're kinda stuck with that; it's notoriously hard to find the right parts, all in working order, and put back like it belongs. At this point, better just hope you don't live anywhere that has "visual" inspections (such as California), or that you ever plan on moving to such a place.

Re: 87 Firebird Help
For the distributor I would need to replace the whole unit right ?
Also would you happen to know what the right distributor is?
yeah I live in the midwest so the air injection system thing won't be an issue.
I'm fine with it if it doesn't have it. I just wanted to make sure it didn't cause any problems with the engine by not having one.
Cool thanks this helps a lot!
