car wont go faster than 10 mph. i can rev it in park but it sounds sluggish and it hesitates alittle but when i put it in drive no matter how hard i press on the gas the rpm's wont pass roughly 1000. here's the story i was driving home from my friends house at night and i pressed on the gas when the light turned green and let off the gas, as soon as i let off it felt like the car died which it did five seconds later so i pulled over and came to a stop and went to put it in park and it made a zzzzzz sound when i tried at first. finally i tried to drive it and as soon as i turned it on a very strong burning smell started then when i tried to drive the kid following me said there was black smoke comin out the tailpipe.

That sounds like you broke something.

Does it sound like a dinner bell ringing when you run it? Or do you hear any clicking or hammering sound from the motor at idle?

 

that's the weird thing it doesn't sound any different when running, besides the slight hesitation when i rev it

 

another thing i wanna add is that my torque converter has been unplugged for roughly 1xxx miles so could that also be part of the problem

 

Check your trans fluid. Is it red or dark? Does it smell burnt? Any specks of bright metal?

 

plugged catalytic converter can cause that(if one is still in place)
