Push Rod in the "Up" position
With the push rod in the "up" position, how much of it shows where it meet the fuel pump arm? Is it necessary to have the rod in the "up" position when installing a fuel pump, or is the installation simply easier in that position?
BTW, any tips or tricks would be useful (I can't access the bolt hole in the front of the block).

Re: Push Rod in the "Up" position
Fuel pump pushrod will always have tension on it no matter if it's on or off the pump lobe. It's a little bit easier to install the pump when it's on the base circle but not a requirement.
One trick to holding the pushrod in place is to take the bolt out of front of the engine that's in the upper hole (original front motor mount holes on front of engine). It's only a short bolt to plug the hole. Install a longer bolt in the hole just enough to hold the pushrod in place. Install fuel pump. Remove long bolt and reinstall short bolt.
No other tricks to hold the pushrod in place. Grease on the end doesn't provide enough sticking force.
Not all small blocks have a hole that goes all the way through for this trick.

Re: Push Rod in the "Up" position
As I mention, I can't access the hole, if there is one (because of my serp setup).
I've read that if you remove the push rod all together and slather it with bearing grease it'll stay if you're quick enough.
I've also seen the hacksaw blade trick, which might be an idea to start with.
Thanks,
JamesC
