Don't you think that you may have a battery issue? Did you try it with a known good battery IN the car? Can you try connecting jumper cables to someone else's car battery (no need to remove it) to see if it cranks?

Sure sounds like you're having battery issues.

(I made another post, but it's not showing up for some reason, so I'll just say it, again ...) Yes, it sure sounds like a battery issue to me. First thing I would have done is to see if I could jumper it from someone else's car battery. You know the routine ... two cars next to one another with jumper cables connected. If that cranked it, then it rules out starter and battery cable from battery to starter.

Re: Dies out after giving gas

The only reason I took out my starter is because I thought the starter was bad because the voltmeter was reading 12 volts and I had bright lights in the car. So I took it to the shop and put it in a starter tester. And I'll try the battery thing when I get home today.

Took the battery out and went to advance auto where they fully charged the battery and tested it. It came back bad. 325 cranking out of 650 and 13.7 volts.

Rusty we have a newer snap on scanner too. When I go to the shop Monday I'll get the serial number off that one.

It happens. Probably has a dead cell or one that's on it's way out. Although you may read 12 VDC across a battery, that's just a static voltage measurement that tells you nothing of the amperage that's flowing through the wires. From my experience, there are batteries that have "5 year warranties", but, in reality, you're doing good to get three years out of it. Although, I have seen batteries that have lasted for five years. A lot of it depends on the environment. Harsh winters take a toll on batteries, so it's probable that it won't last as long as in a much warmer environment.

Glad to see you got to the root of the problem.

I just replaced it with the same kind of battery. Well we solved that problem, still have the rough idle problem to solve still

See if it will even crank with a pair of jumper cables connected between your battery and another vehicle. It's possible the battery you purchased could be a bum battery. In any case, doing this will rule out or confirm that is the battery or cable. Also, ensure you have good, clean, and tight connections.

Re: Dies out after giving gas

Tried it no such luck. I went from battery to battery. It cranked 5 times then wouldn't crank again. I went from other vehicles battery straight to my starter nothing. I even ground Theodore to make sure it was a good ground but hey guess what still nothing.

Re: Dies out after giving gas

If the new battery is good, and if the existing cable is good, then I would guess that the starter is failing under load. And from what I've seen, when a starter is taken into a parts house to be tested, they don't have a spare engine that it gets mounted to for a load test. Replace the starter.

Re: Dies out after giving gas

I had a multimeter on the battery had someone try to crank it and the voltage only dropped a half a volt.

Well good news, the solenoid on the starter was bad like I was thinking. Just went ahead and bought a new starter and solenoid put it on and it fires up like a champ! Thanks for all the help!👍
