loud cling, car died. It's my engine gone?

Alright, so I replaced my oil the other day. I randomly did a check only to realize that it's been running low(didn't know, my oil gauge is out). After replacing the oil I heard a slight tick. That tick has been there for a while. But I didn't think much of it.

A cling went of in the engine while accelerating. Then the car died. When I try to start it, everything turns over, and it putts like it's trying to start, and I can see smoke coming from the pipes. And a misfire makes smoke come from the carb

I thought maybe a lifter came off? A friend suggested a oil ring failure? Any more suggestions?

sounds like you may have jumped a timing chain a couple of teeth. Backfiring indicates to me that timing may be the cause. Re-time the car by bring up #1 TDC on compression and lining up HB to 0 and look at dizzy. It SHOULD be pointing to #1 on the cap. If no, sumtin bad may of happened.....

how many miles on the engine?

About 155k, I keep up with the maintenance, but apparently I had an oil leak

Bent an intake valve? The air/fuel is getting pumped back into the intake and igniting?

Remove valve covers and look for loose push rods (intake size), broken springs, etc. Or, check compression on each cylinder.... not likely to do more damage to the enginre at this point.

FYI: I over-reved my 305 (RS cruise control cable on TPI hung the throttle open during a shift and HELLO 7K! ) and damaged the locks. A few months later they let go, dropping and bending an intake valve.
