General Performance Mods?

Hey guys, I'll get right down to the point for the purpose of the thread.
I've been searching low and high for ways to pull out power in a stock 1986 Pontiac Trans Am with the 305 engine in it. I can't really seem to find a list of things you can do to get some power from it, and being a person who's used to imports (yes, flame me if you must) and wanting to go back to the grass roots of Third Gen beauties, can someone point me in the directions of general things done to this engine to get some power to it? Doesn't matter what type of budget it runs, anything helps! Thanks guys!

Re: General Performance Mods?

Rip that stock exhaust off and put something that actually flows in it's place, headers on back.
If you're in a location that doesn't require emissions testing - nix all of it too. You'll have to tuck some wires away but it can be done.
Getting the thing to breathe properly will do wonders to that engine.

Re: General Performance Mods?

Headers and atleast 2.75in if not 3in exhaust is a big start and a must if u are serious about making any power. Different air cleaner assemblies can be an improvement. Replacing stock gears for 3.42 or 3.73 gear ratios will really wake one up also. But do not expect to make a rocket out of that 305. It can be a peppy and very reliable engine though. Is it TPI.TBI,or carb? The TPI cars are fairly quick for what they are.3

Re: General Performance Mods?

Same as the import world. Start with the basics Intake, headers and exhaust. Stay away from any exhaust that is 2.5" and do NOT buy summit house brand, flowtek or ebay cheap headers they suck.

you will hear headers is the first thing to do. but be advised they can be a huge headache. most of them just plain do not fit. accessory brackets, if you have ac, will have to be fabbed or modified. starters need a heat shield. spark plug access is a joke. if after knowing all this you feel the need. well , I told you so.
