Crank but no start

This is my first engine/tranny swap. I bought an 87 iroc as a donor car to that had a hot wired fuel pump. I have put the 305 tbi from my 92 RS into the iroc which was a 350 tpi. I have everything hooked up but when I turn the key on I do not here the fuel pump prime. The relays click and it will crank but not start. I have checked all of the fuses and they are all good. There was a hot wire connected to the battery in the 87 but of course I'm using the tbi wiring harness. If I'm just missing the hot wire, where does it need to go?

I also have no oil pressure when the car is trying to crank. It has an aftermarket alarm system on it as well that had cause the car not to crank at one point. I currently have the 92 tbi ecm in the car. when trying to crank there is no fuel coming out of the fuel injectors. Hope this isn't confusing.

Please Help!!!!

Computer won't let me edit. The 87 was running great before I took the 350 TPI and put in the 305 TBI

Re: Crank but no start

The Iroc's wiring was all jacked up. Here is a pic of what I assume is the Fuel Pump fuse. Would this have been ran to the battery?

Re: Crank but no start

Really desparate here fellas. Would it be easier to undo the hot wired fuel pump and allow it to use the factory wiring. I'm pretty sure i would have to modify the 92 TBI harness to allow for the hot wired fuel pump.

Is VATs still active in the 92's ECM?

Yes, Vats is still active. I swapped the 87 ecm back in the car and got the same result, no fuel pump priming.

Re: Crank but no start

Just ran 12v to the tan wire going to the fuel pump and the pump came on and I heard the fuel running to the engine . I measured the volts at my relay and at the Fuel pump fuse and I have the correct voltage. So is the disconnect between the fuse panel and the engine harness? I'm so lost here.

Re: Crank but no start

If VATs is still active then the injectors wont fire. Normally you couldn't crank, but since your car is an 87 the starter relay isn't grounded through the VATs module, since you don't have one.

Re: Crank but no start

I tried testing the tan wire running to the fuel pump and only got .1 volt. should it be more than that? should I be testing with something other than volts?

Re: Crank but no start

So I've tried running the 12v to terminal G and a ground to Terminal A at the ALDL and the pump didn't come on. I've tried to run a 12V source to pin E at the relay with no luck. I've tried jumping the Orange and gray wires at the fuel pump relay with no luck. Not sure if i'm doing it right or not but the only way I can get the pump on is to run a 12V to the tan wire going to the fuel pump. I broke the Oil Pressure switch when I took the engine out and had to replace it before going in the car. I've heard new a OPS can be bad. Could that be my problem?

Re: Crank but no start

So after running a 12V wire to the tan wire and priming the fuel pump i still get no start. I unhooked the fuel line at the TB and had gas coming out so it looks like the fuel is getting to the TB. The fuel pump still won't prime though.

Re: Crank but no start

There is a fuse right near the battery (may be the one from the pic you posted). It is the power for the ECM and fuel pump.

Are you using the TBI fuel pump?

Like I said earlier though, if VATs is active in the 92 ECM your injectors wont fire...

I've checked the voltage at the fuel pump fuse and the relay and they are good. The relay gets the signal from the ECM and clicks on. I am still using the TPI fuel pump at the moment. I thought i would at least be able to get the car to crank before i swapped out the fuel pumps. If VATS is active with the 92 ecm, wouldn't plugging up the 87 ECM remedy that problem?

Re: Crank but no start

So i'm going to find someone to flash my ecu and disable VATS. Another thing I found out is that the c100 drivers side harness connector is different on the 92 tbi harness. Do I need to swap these out or will it be ok.

Re: Crank but no start

Got my new TBI chip with VATS deleted. It will start now but only when I run a hot wire to the tan wire but I still have an issue with the fuel pump not priming.

Re: Crank but no start

You should have saved yourself the headache and swapped everything from the TPI over.

If the car won't spin that pump, check the relay and the oil pressure switch. If both are gone, it won't do ****.

I've tested the relay and it's fine. I had to replace the oil pressure switch because when I pulled the engine the old switch got broken.

Make sure the ground on the back of the motor on the passenger head is connected. I believe there are three things connected to the stud.

The ground is fine. I've found that the issue is the signal from the fuel pump relay was not getting to the fuel pump. I've tested this by running a wire from the gray wire at the relay to the tan wire going to the fuel pump. The fuel pump primes and it starts. It runs a little rough to start with then idles a little high but dies when put in gear. Just to clarify, it was 2 different issues causing the no start. The fuel pump relay signal was 1, and the other was VATS. I had VATS deleted and then the injectors fired.

I want to thank everyone for your suggestions
