Re: camshaft thrust plate

Nothing.

The oil pump puts enough load on the distributor gear to hold it in. There's a SLIGHT (emphasis on SLIGHT) angle on the lobes, that helps.

Re: camshaft thrust plate

Yep what Sofa said.

All flat tappet cams in the SBC/BBC uses no retaining plate/button. The angle of the cam lobe, lifter riding on lobe and the oil pump shaft/dist. gear/cam gear engagement holds the cam in place.

Roller cam engines on the other hand do not have the angle to the cam lobes and lifter don't sit on the lobe, just the wheel rolls on it, so they need a retainer of some sorts like a cam button, thrust plate, etc.

You've gotten nicer. Used to be, you'd only put 'Nothing.'... or was that me? Damnit.
