Needing some help with an ignition lock cylinder issue
Ok guys I need some help here because I am stumped. First off this is not 3rd gen related, but I trust the advice here more then anywhere else.
Here is my issue... I just bought a 2000 GMC K2500 Crew Cab 4x4 auto and the ignition cylinder stick so bad that it took me ten agonizing minutes to start it this morning. Key goes in and comes out just fine, but it has to be pushed in just right and turned perfect to get it out of the lock position. I have no issue with changing it out, but since it is a single key system I don't want to have one key for the ignition and one for the doors.
Can you change out the cylinder but keep the old key by changing out the "guts"?

Try getting a new key made. Sometimes its just 1 tooth thats really smoothed down preventing it from turning. Another problem could be if the steering wheel is loose; I know on third gens you can adjust the retaining bolts not sure about your car though.

Biggest problem with lock cylinders is lack of lubrication. Use dry graphite spray available at any parts store.
If lube doesn't help and the cylinder is shot, you can buy a new one and code it to your old key:
