Non computer controlled cam in tbi
Non computer controlled cam in tbi
Hello I was told if I put a small close to stock cam that's not computer controlled in my stock tbi that it will work but just show the check engine light.
I found out the motor in my car has been replaced with a truck motor. Has T in the casting number. Anyways I looked it up an found that its a 80 to 86 motor with a tbi setup on it. It also has a flat tappet cam.
I'm looking for cheap to get my car running for now. I have been looking that some summit cams
Part# sum-k1100 and part# sum-k1101.
They are not computer controlled but cheap 103$ an small cam.
Would they work in the tbi with out changing any thing?
I went to napa an they are trying to sell me the stock cam without lifters for 600$ I can get a 350 around here for that price.
I just need a cheap cam to get my car running again till tax time.

Re: Non computer controlled cam in tbi
No camshaft is "computer controlled". It's the overlap of the cam that causes less vacuum, rougher idle, and that's what the computer can't deal with.
Is your engine a 305 or 350? The same cam acts bigger/smaller in diff. size engines.
The K1100 and K1101 are both too small to even bother with. Those are stock sized cams.. In fact some of the stock third gen cams are bigger than those.
The '88/89 305 and 350 had a .415"/.430" lift, 207/213@.050" cam
The K1102 and K1103 are the ones I would look at. If 305 the K1102, if 350 the K1103.
Those will work with your TBI/computer and will give you a power gain

Stock is what I'm looking for. Yes I have 305 tbi. The year being from 80 to 86. If I get the k1102 or k1103 I will need to do head work an change fuel pump. I don't have the money to pump up this motor. I just want it to run so I can drive it to work.
Exit sorry didn't see the rest of your post. That's what I want I'm just afraid that the car won't run right. I just need it running for now later I will trash the 305 an get me a 350
Thank you for the reply.

Re: Non computer controlled cam in tbi
The K1102 will not need ANY changes made.
You have some misinformation on what the stock computer system, and fuel system can handle. Yes it can't deal with a 230* + cam, but a mild cam up to about 218, 220* or so aint a prob as long as the LSA is 112 or higher. Can't toss a 106 or 108 LSA cam in with the computer.. The tight LSA has too much overlap
The K1100, 1101, and 1102 would all work just fine. If you just want stock then the K1101 is what you need.
If you want a mild performance gain, go with the K1102. This is the one I would recommed. It will work fine with your stock computer, fuel pump, heads, tb, etc.
It has been used many times in stock 305 and 350 TBI engines
