Concerned about oil amount.

Hi there everyone, this is my first post so pardon me if I did this incorrectly. I recently purchased a 1984 Z28 G code, and went to change the oil on it today, the manual says five quarts. I put on an ACDelco 1218 oil filter and put in most of a 5qt bottle of Valvoline 10w-30. let car run for a few minutes, I notice it has low idle and high oil pressure (60) I let it sit for 5 minutes and then check the stick, which shows overfilled... What did I do wrong? the oil was already about a half quaet low prior to changing and when I put the old oil in the container it reads a little over 4 quarts. Is my engine going to be ok?

Re: Concerned about oil amount.

It usually takes a scosche less than 5 qts to fill one up; exact amount depends on the oil filter you use. Which, the 1218 is one of the larger ones, holds more. But, a quarter of a quart or whatever above the mark, won't bother a thing.

Re: Concerned about oil amount.

Thank you, I actually got ahead of myself and drained about a quart out just to be safe, and afterwards when I checked the dipstick it was right at add. I think maybe the dipstick tube just has a little oil up it it on one side, because when i flip the dipstick over it is cleaner and reads correctly.
