Casting number/engine suffix confusion
I pulled my alternator today in my 85 IROC-Z to get it rebuilt, and decided to take a look at the machined pad on the passenger side. I cleaned the area and found K1002ADD and no partial vin under it. Just a blank space. I have seen pictures with proper ID numbers and partial vins, but mine doesnt show a partial vin. As for the suffix ADD, i cannot find that on any search on the internet. I found lists, but nothing for ADD. I understand what the K and 1002 mean however.
The block casting code in the back is correct for 80-85 305 small block (14010203). Something isnt adding up, I just dont know what to make of this. If the engine was decked, wouldnt the "K1002ADD" be gone with the partial vin?
Please help.

Could be a replacement engine. It is 30 years old.

Re: Casting number/engine suffix confusion
Partial vin was not stamped into a good portion of the factory blocks.
Here's something from another site.. (Nastyz28.com)
"Starting in 1970, the serial number/VIN is stamped either above the oil filter, somewhere on the block pad (in front of the cylinder head), or on the transmission flange somewhere. Chevrolet issued technical service bulletins to indicate which engines were to recieve a vin stamp, so who knows what could have happend (or not happened)"

Re: Casting number/engine suffix confusion
Replacement engines don't usually have factory stamped numbers on them. If I was a rebuilder, I machine off the original numbers and put my own codes on the parts to know they came from my shop.

Re: Casting number/engine suffix confusion
I guess I have another question. Were most (if not all) of the engines built at Flint? Seems like all on this website that people have questions about have the V code to start.
I have a friend with a 85 T/A, 305TPI, his car was built at Norwood in late February, and his pad shows V02**CDN, with the partial VIN below it. Since Mine was built May 1st, 305TPI, I should expect to see V04**CDN, since the engines were built a few days before assembly. The only difference is my car was special ordered by the customer. I doubt this has anything to do with block stampings?
I guess the K canadian plant code is really throwing me off. Its possible the VIN could be elsewhere on the block, but with the date code showing October 2nd, Im thinking this engine is not original.
