Strange misfire Please Help

I have an 88 formula 350 and it runs awesome as long as it is at about 2000 rpm, but it barely idles and shakes like a freaking chihuahua thank you.

Re: Strange misfire Please Help

Welcome Aboard!

Running at 2,000 RPM will mask a lot of problems, including a dead miss, bent valve, crossfire, broken spring or rocker arm, and other things.

Begin with the basics. Spark plugs and wires must be in good condition. The distributor cap and rotor should be intact and without carbon streaks. Injectors must be operating for all cylinders.

A rudimentary power balance test can be performed to identify which cylinder(s) might be causing the problems. Using insulated spark plug boot pliers or some other suitable tool, the plug wires can be removed one at a time while the engine is idling to identify dead holes. If removing a plug wire for a particular cylinder causes no change in idle quality, that cylinder is a good place to start investigating.

Egr valve stuck open or getting vacuum at idle will cause a very rough idle or stalling.
