Car won't start

Maaaan has it been a while since i've been on these forums. Looking for some help. Car over the years has been ...harder to start. First "one click" of nothing, then it'd start. Then 3, then 5..last year i thought the car was gonna leave me at the auto parts store.

Last week i pulled the starter. No shims. Had it rebuilt by a local guy - basically guts it, and remans it. Plus side - i get the same case back. Install it. Turn the key - click. Nothing. Sounds like the same sound as before...which to me is odd.

Is my thinking right - rebuild the same starter..if it had shims (it didn't) reuse them, should be same fit. No shims - none needed - same fit because it's the same case? Wondering why the hell it wont' start. It's on the charger now. Batt was disconnected over the winter, but it's pretty old too. Wondering if it didn't hold enough charge. Doesn't sound though like it's straining to start..it's sounding like somethings hitting. Which - rebuilding the same case and just gutting it, I'd think the starter should be a direct replace w/the same amt of space.

Thanks in advance!
