Is the gas pedal bracket important?

Is the gas pedal bracket important? Necessary at all? The one under the dash right near your foot. Heres a pic.

Whats it for? Is it necessary or can I leave it off? I bent it because i put it back on wrong. Now it wont go on right again so im hoping i can just leave it off.

Nevermind, figured it out. Got another bracket at the junkyard. The bracket stops the pedal from travelling too far up.
