Need help figure out whats going on
Hello not sure if this is the right section to post if not I do apologize and I will post this in the proper thread. I currently have a 1987 Iroc-Z28 with a 5.7 (was a 5.0 but engine went and swapped it with a 5.7) automatic TPI. I am having some issues. Please bare with me and I will try to give out as much detail as I can.
Over the winter I let my car sit but did make point to start the car every other week for about ten minutes. Once we got some warmer weather I taken the car out twice so far. I should mention I did use fuel treatment in the car during the weather encase I was not able to start the vehicle. So first time I take the car out to and from work about 20 min drive depending on traffic no problems whats so ever. The second day I do the same thing. That night on the second day I take my car out and no even 5 min down the road car just well stalls out on me. I pop the hood and check the battery connection and anything else I can see or think of and everything was good. The next day before work I get out and start the car and started right up on the second crank no problems. Just to be safe I took my other car to work. I get home after work and again car starts right up. After 5 min the car just stops.
So far I have replaced the
Ignition control module
with this one (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/c...Term=ignition+)
Ignition coil
with this one (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/a...15034|L3*16064)
Fuel filter
parts of the fuel line
Distributor cap and rotor kit
with this one (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/a...rm=distributer)
part of the distributor itself the one with the two wires that connect to the Ignition control module sorry don't know the exact name of it.
After all said and done the car started right up got the timing down perfect car ran for four and a half miles and then just stopped. My mechanic determined it was the new Ignition control module that we replaced and we got a brand new one. Slapped it in and car started right up idled for about ten mins and we get in for a test drive and not even 15 seconds worth of driving car dies out.
We found that a bad ground in the computer replaced the computer with one from napa today and car won't even start up.
The car did have a tune up less then a year ago if that helps. So in short I have no idea what the hell is going on. Maybe someone can help me? If any more information is needed I will do my best to give it. Again if this is the wrong section I do apologize. Thank you.
Edit* Oh and sorry forgot to mention but we did clean any grounding we could find both the wire, bolt or screw and the paint to a nice and shinny area.

Does it start when you put the old computer back in?

Re: Need help figure out whats going on
No there was a bad grounding in the ECM that's why we had to get a new one. New one is green across the board.
Correction as stated in my first post when and I don't know the exact name of the part but it's under the distributor cap that has two wires connecting to the Ignition control module was replaced it had started right up and ran for four and a half miles before giving out. Then we replaced the ignition control module with a new one the car started up idled for ten minutes. Then we had taken it out for a test drive and it had stalled not even 15 seconds on the road.

Re: Need help figure out whats going on
Sounds like that ign module is a bad one. If you read the reviews on the link you posted they're problematic. I'd take it back and have it tested repeatedly. It'll likely fail when hot. When it fails....buy an AC Delco or US made high quality unit.
Re: Need help figure out whats going on
I'm having some of the same problems on an 88 GTA. Replaced computer and ICM. I have power to the control module when I turn the key but the ICM relay isn't closing, tested the relay and it does work when jumped with 12 volts. Checked the green light gauge wire and it's not connecting to something some where, if I jump the light gauge green wire to ground the engine will crank but wont start by itself it will run on starter fluid. Checked injectors and voltage to them is constant there is no pulse. So my ???? is where does the light gauge green wire on the ICM go to I think that must have something to do with the injector pulse signal. I have looked every where trying to find a wiring diagram that shows this but I can't find one. Also someone in the past has disabled the security system.

Re: Need help figure out whats going on
Hello and good day to all. So an update it turns out that the tachometer that has one wire connecting to my Ignition coil was bad. We cut the wire and the car runs just as she should now. So if anyone is having the same issue check the wiring.
