My wideband is all over the place

Hey Guys,

Just installed a wideband (14point7.com) and my readings are all over the place. When cruising it goes from 11 to 48? I have a good 12v source. The controller/gauge is grounded to the back of the passenger side head. And the ground for the O2 is attached to a grounding point on my firewall. The instructions say to not ground the controller and sensor at the same place. The grounds are clean.

Even when the engine is NOT running, but the key is forward, I'm getting all wacky readings.

Here's a video:

Re: My wideband is all over the place

I've got to admit , they have me a bit baffled about not using the same place to ground both units , and here's why ;

If the engine and chassis are properly connected together with the appropriate ground straps , every and all pieces of metal should be at the same electrical potential . If , for instance , one place is "more grounded" than a different place , that would indicate a poor connection between the two . That's why I'm baffled , that in theory every ground should be at the same electrical level of conductivity , and so what should the shared ground matter if any and all grounds are truly electrically one and the same ?

Now with that said , if it really does matter , I think I'd have done it in the reverse order than you did , I'd ground the sensor to the engine and the gauge to the chassis . My reasoning being that a stock O2 grounds to the engine (by virtue of being screwed into the exhaust) and try that to see if the jumpy readings become steadier ?

Re: My wideband is all over the place

Thanks for the reply. I will try that when I get home. I hope there's nothing wrong with the box. I don't think I should be getting readings that have huge swings when the engine isn't even running.

Re: My wideband is all over the place

Yes that video shows a erratic display and none of those numbers are reliable so dont think your fueling is doing that or the car would run like chicken without its head. I think what the mfr (14point7) is trying to prevent with separate dedicated grounds is to prevent either some loading on the other circuit or a a induced potential in one or the other. Or maybe there is a comparative function that wont work if both circuits are held at same potential. Anyways those are just possibilities and best guesses but u should follow what the mfr directs.

So i open the 14point7 w/s and sorry but i cant tell which device u own/using and cannot look at any specific info to help u.

If u are receiving the same output with engine off then the wb is not even processing the sensor output and u have an installation problem somewhere. Thats as far i can go w/o knowing which model u own.

Thx for the w/s link. I like their iDash virtual dashboard - cool.

Re: My wideband is all over the place

I own the PP2. I'm about to go move around some grounds and see if it helps. I did notice when the cars off I get wacky readings but it's in a pattern that keeps looping. 12-45-88-99 ...etc. When the cars running. There is no pattern. But the readings are all over the place.

Re: My wideband is all over the place

Ok i found the user manual on the w/s. It doesnt have any troubleshooting info and i would just have to ask u patronizing questions on the install - i dont think u need that. I did notice that manual says u cant use the stock sensors and hope your not trying to do that but use their sensors connected to their unit.

Re: My wideband is all over the place

Well I'm out of ideas. The wires that are suppose to have 12v are good. The grounds are good. And clean. The O2 is seated all the way. No exhaust leaks. I moved the grounds around with the same results. Guess I'll call them and see what they suggest.

[Edit]
Just an update for anyone that comes across this post in the future. The controller box was bad. 14point7 sent me a new one and everything works great now.
