Cam selection help

Hi, I just got my first thirdgen and first Chevy(91 Camaro RS)

The car was originally equipped with a l03 TBI 305 but its no longer there

I have a good running l05 350 from a truck i bought from a friend, the engine has already been converted to carb and I plan on keeping it that way since the TBI and wiring harness is missing from my car.

My question to you guys is what cam should I drop on it while I still have the engine out?

I know these engines have a flat tapped cam so that gives me tons of options, but I also know they have the swirl port heads .

I was looking at summit´s 1102 (204/214) cam and also at the 1103 (214/224) but am open to suggestions.

My goal is a daily driver with a little more power than stock and reasonable MPGs , I´m planning on running shorty headers and dual exhaust with an x pipe dumped just before the axle. The engine currently has a 4bbl intake from a Caprice, or so I was told, in fact I think its the same as the lg4 my brother has. Carb will be a holley 600cfm with an adapter. Upgrading heads is currently out of the budget. It has a 700r4 and stock 2.73 gears which will be soon replaced by a 3.73 posi.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Cam selection help

For a 350, I'd go with the -1103 cam.
Good plan on the 3.73 gears and posi. I prefer 3.42's for all around road use with 26-ish diameter tires, but the 3.73's are a plus at the strip or if running slightly taller tires.
Also consider a TC upgrade to at least a GM S-10, or better yet a 9.5" in the 2800-3000 stall range.
You'll get suggestions to forego the shorty headers and run longtubes; however, I've seen such good results with shortys and Tri-Y's, I don't think the packaging hassle is worth it for a mild motor combo like you're talking about.

That lil Summit cam and those gears will definitely make a world of difference.

Re: Cam selection help

Lunati High Efficiency 268
Crane Energizer 260 or 272
Comp HE 260 or 268

Pic your favorite as any would be perfect for those heads. The swirlies LOVE a single pattern cam.

Re: Cam selection help

Thanks for the help guys! I guess I´ll take a look at those single pattern cams and pick one up.

Another quick question, is it worth to swap the current intake on the engine(LG4 I think) to a Edelbrock Performer?

Will I see some gains? I already have the Performer but it is for a non-centerbolt engine, I guess I could elongate the center holes as the previous owner did with the current intake on my engine?

Re: Cam selection help

I seen some good suggestions, a single pattern cam is great for tbi heads (efficient exhaust chamber from the swirl port "fast burn" design) one big thing is dont over cam, stock stall is what you want with tbi heads, they make gobs of off idle power but die out quickly into the 5000 rpm range, a cam with a idle-5000ish rpm range would be a low end monster with an impressive mid range as far as torque output, those gears will really help you get that added power to the pavement, also upgrade springs, i bought the .490 max lift summit spring kit for my tbi truck and they are a decent piece for any mild flat tappet cam. Just looking through cams i had wrote down for engines with tbi heads, a lunati street master 276adv 10120316 (pn) would be a awesome steet cam for the limitations of some tbi heads 800-5200 rpm range, .221/221@.050 and .454 .454 lift, would match up very well to a tbi head flow wise, people always hate on tbi but the low end flow of those heads is something special for a factory head.

Re: Cam selection help

Also try and find a edelbrock performer eps, its one of the best idle-5500 intakes you can get, have one on my camaro and i love it
