Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Hello everyone, I have a 1989 Firebird 305 TBI, I'm having issues with the fuel pump, the car stalled a few times, and now it will not start at all, the fuel pump does not prime when the key is turned and the gas gauge sais it's over full, if I'm correct that means there's no power getting to the pump and sending unit? I replaced the fuel pump, the fuel relay (If the relay in the picture is the right one) I noticed that the relay and plug are a bit burnt. Also I followed the ground wire from the pump and put a new end on it as well as a new bolt because they were pretty rusty. Still no luck with getting the pump to prime. About a month before this problem started I have a PROM Chip burnt to bypass VATS, not sure if that would have anything to do with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this car is my daily driver!
This is the relay that is burnt, is his the correct one for the fuel pump?
Have to tried jumping the relay to see if you can get the pump to come on? I'm afraid I can't advise on which wires to bridge, I'm only familiar with TPI relays.

I haven't tried that yet, would that be worth doing even with the new relay?
Could be the small fuse on the driver's side just behind the charcoal canister area. Had a similar issue there. When I tested my relay, I just used a test light to find the one that had 12v power and then jumped every wire one by one until the fuel pump came on. However, I'm only telling you what I did and not telling you to go and give every wire on that relay 12v, I'm just saying that is how I did it. I'm sure you can find a wiring diagram for the engine on the austinsthirdgen site. I only did what I did because I was in the moment and working on the vehicle and did not want to stop just to go and research , however that does save problems and future money
Pretty sure my relay has 5 wires as well. Does the bigger black wire with a red stripe and the bigger red wire from the relay end up near the battery? The black leading to a fuse, and the red leading to a fuseable link looking piece of wire ?
My mistake the relay has 4 wires. What setting do I use on my multimeter to check if there's power to the pump and on the pumps power wire at the relay
Hello everyone... I know this post is a tad old but wanted to share my issue. I have an 85 iroc z. The fuel gauge never read correctly. I just installed a 1AAuto fuel sending unit with the new seal. After i hooked up the wire harness from the sending unit to the the body connector behind the rear seats... I get nothing. So i had to imprevise. I testes the wires on the body connector (had to cut it off) Pink wire is definitely the power wire, Black wire is obviously the ground wire and the Tan wire im told is for the fuel pump but it doesn't pertain to me bc i have an external fuel pump.
On the sending unit i have a Purple wire ( assuming its the power wire) A Gray wire (no clue here) and a Black wire with white stripe. So i just hooked up wire for wire....Pink-Purple....Gray-Tan & Black-Black w/ white stripe.... And i get..............
An incorrect reading. I know i have about 8.5-10 gallons of fuel in the tank so logically it should read about 1/2-3/5 full.
My question is did i hook up the wires correctly???
Any help on this would be great, since i have no clue whats going on.

Re: Please Help! Fuel Pump Not Working
I have a feeling you meant to post this in another thread and not this 10 year old thread about fuel pump issues.
That car (Firebird XS and Firebird SSA) was a trial run in certain dealer zones to try to drum up sales for Firebirds. It's a base model 2.8L V6 Firebird with the new for 1989 W68 Sport Appearance Package.
It was a sales success. The XS and SSA badging went away. The base 2.8L V6 Firebird with W68 Sport Appearance Package went on sale in all dealer zones afterwards.
For 1991 and 1992 you could get it with the L03 5.0L TBI V8. If the car had the Beechwood Tan or the Beige Tan interior and maybe depending on exterior color it would get the RPO N90 15x7 Diamond Spoke wheels in Gold, Gold FIREBIRD fender emblems and Gold decals on the nose and sail panels, and it would become a Firebird Special Edition with RPO code B5Z. There was no special badging for the 91/92 Firebird SE other than it being Gold instead of Silver.
I'm going off memory here on most of this so take it with a grain of salt.
I graduated high school in 1989 and besides working at my father's furniture and cabinet shop I took care of a local laundry mat for a friend of my fathers. One of my high school teachers that had just started teaching in my last few years of high school was a regular at the laundry mat and he had just got a new Firebird with the W68 Sport Appearance Package. I forget now if it was an 89 or 90. It was Black with a Grey interior, T-tops, 2.8L or 3.1L V6 with 5 speed, and the new Pontiac U1A CD player. It was as loaded up on options as you could have got on a base V6 Firebird back then.
I remember how flawless clean his car was. He owned it forever and drove the wheels off it but it always looked better than brand new whenever I saw it.
EDIT: Maybe if you can remember which thread you meant to post your reply in a Mod can move both of our replies to the correct thread.
