blowby issue?

I've just had the engine rebuilt in my 83 Transam and now have a small amount of oil coming up the dipstick and running down the tube towards the headers. The engine runs ok.
I have checked the PCV and replaced the valve.

The engine did had some misfiring issues when I got it back from the rebuild due to the crossfire injection not working correctly. This has now been fixed, is it possible the misfiring could have dislodged a piston ring?
Are there any other checks I can do I need a blowby pressure test?

Thanks - I really don't want to have to haul the engine out again.

Is the pcv hooked to manifold vacuum? Do you have a breather filter too?

Yes there is vacuum and the PCV valve is connected by a pipe to the manifold. The pipe is not blocked.
The breather snorkel is connected to the air clean via the filter block.

I would try a leakdown test. Compression test may see cyl with low compression then a shot of oil should verify rings arent sealing. But a leakdown test will measure cyl leakage and u can compare w/other cyls.

FYI there are actually blow-by test rigs u can make that will measure blow-by but they wont identify a single cyl - only total blow-by.

Never heard of oil out the dipstick tube except when a dodo didnt install a even a breather and let the crank case pressurize - he had oil squirting out at the oil filter seal and couldnt figure out why. Good humor at least.

You might just need to run it hard for awhile to get the rings to wear in.

Thanks. I gave it a decent run in the weekend and pushed it hard at times. I think it is a case of the rings bedding in as since the run there is less oil coming up the dipstick. Any suggestions on how to bed these in faster?

when you had your "crossfire injection not working correctly" you might have flooded a few of the cylinders with too much fuel and washed all the oil off the cylinder walls and caused your rings to not wear properly, which caused all your blow by. the right way to fix the problem is to tear the engine apart again and install new rings and touch the cylinders up again in the hone. just my advice. i had to do all that in my truck motor.
