Missing fuel tank

So im looking into purchasing an 85 berlinetta for $800 that needs a little work. The interior is in peices. Has a dented up fender. Broken tail light, but worst of all, no fuel tank. I know i can rig up a gas can to the mechanical fuel pump to make it run and take it around the block. Im not really interested in putting a stock tank back in because i know how much of a pain it can be and $300 for a stock tank and sending unit seems dumb to me. I was thinking maybe i could strap a plastic boat tank into the rear cargo recess. Does anyone have any other suggestions or think this is a plausable plan?

Re: Missing fuel tank

Surely you can find a good used tank and sending unit for less than $300. I'd be afraid of the car catching fire with any kind of rigged up gas tank setup. Not sure where you're located, but I wouldn't think something like that is going to pass any kind of safety inspection either.

Re: Missing fuel tank

yea.. please don't rig up something as important as a gas tank. you have no idea how a rigged plastic tank will hold up (not hold up) if you were to ever get rear ended.. the stock gas tanks were designed with those safety thoughts in mind.. this isn't something to hack together.. goto a junk yard and find yourself a used unit and be done with it, it may be a bit of work to do it right, but it is the correct way to do it.. if you want you can always upgrade to a 4th gen unit.

Re: Missing fuel tank

If you are local to Georgia, I part out third gens and sell fuel tanks for $50 to $100

Re: Missing fuel tank

This was just a thought i had. Thought maybe it would be ok if it was held in securely and i made a bulkhead to keep that area seperate from the interior. Ive searches online a new tank is give or take $150 plus shipping and its the same for the sending unit. Then i still need the straps. All of the junkyards in my area remove the gas tanks before putting cars in the yard so that route is a no go

Re: Missing fuel tank

Of all the things to alternate-ethnically-engineer, the gas tank HAS TO be right on up there with brakes.

Do it RIGHT or don't do it at all. I'd hate for Natileigh to grow up without her daddy. Or for her to be involved too and not grow up at all.

Re: Missing fuel tank

The only way I would put a fuel tank in that way was if it was a fuel cell. However that setup will cost more then a factory setup would.

Re: Missing fuel tank

Where are you located? I have a perfectly good '82 gas tank and mechanical pump sending unit you can have for the gettin'. Only reason I've kept it around is in case a fellow thirdgen'r needed a tank.

Re: Missing fuel tank

You would do that to save $300? You would actually pull up to a gas station and raise your hatch to fuel up? Undoubtedly you would spill some gas each time. It would smell horrible and God forbid if you're a smoker. Guess you could just check the rear view mirror to see whether or not you need gas. This is a time to push political correctness aside and tell you this is nuts. If you're near NC, contact me, I can help you out. Third gen parts are cheap and plentiful here.
