How to properly check oil level?

I hope this isn't as stupid as it sounds,so bare with me. On my dipstick it says "operating range." Which to me says to check the oil while the engine is on and warmed up. Am I right? Every other car I've dealt with always had a "cold level" and/or a "hot level."

Are you sure you're looking at the oil dipstick and not the trans fluid dipstick? I've never seen an oil dipstick with "hot" and "cold" on it, but all of the trans fluid dipsticks I've seen have those markings.

Operation Indoctrination

Operating Range refers to the maximum and minimum recommended levels of oil when the engine is warmed up, and the engine is OFF.

Typically for your VIN add one quart if the level is at the bottom of the Operating Range.
