Quick question about B&M shifter installation...

Tomorrow im gonna be installing my new B&M megashifter, and tonite i was reading over the directions and have one question that i hope you guys could answer...

in the instructions it talked about how on some models of camaros there are two extra wires connected to the wire connector...supposedly they lock out the converter clutch and change idle speeds in neutral and park.. It says that you can connect them on a relay (bought at radio shack) and it will restore it to the normal function.... now my question is if this is really necessary or not?? Will my car run fine if i decide not to wire in the relay??

BTW, my car is a 1990 Camaro

TIA

A big hint, don't use the cable they give you, it's junk. It has broken on numerous people, I used the stock cable, and so have others. Didn't even require getting under the car. You will have to do some minor fabrication (takes about 5 mins), you'll have to cut a bracket and drill a hole. As far as the relay, I didn't install it, I've heard other on these boards that haven't and don't have any problems. Do a search on the topic and you might get some more answers. Supposedly, if I remember correctly the only way not having the relay installed will affect your car is if you're doing 35mph in N or something like that. Another tip, don't ever put Armorol on the boot or it will fall apart. Also use lock tite on the handle or it will strip.

Everything Mark said seems to be the general consensus around here. However, I used the supplied B&M cable and haven't had a problem with it yet. As for the relay, I didn't use it and haven't experienced any problems from it.

Yeah, I agree with ViciousZ, That everyting works OK. I, though installed the relay, 'cause my car goes nuts if you try any monkey bizzness with the electronics. The relay isn't hard to install if you plan ahead, and don't mind doing some soldering. I had no trouble with the cable for two years, untill I got my new trans. The shop didn't put the cable in the right way (the way they tell you) and it split about a month later. The new one has been on for about a year, and no problems.

P.S: Why does everybody have the t-handle mounted at a 45 degree angle? MIne is straight across. Just wondering....

speedcat, they mount the t-handle at 45º because they don't have the nut below the handle to lock it into place. Instead they just tighten the handle all the way down. I also took care to route the B&M cable correctly, and no problems.

If they dont have the nut on the threads they cram alittle bit of paper in the shiter **** hole so it wont screw down that much. (its ghetto) but it should work. I used to have the mega shifter with my old 700-r4, and now that im back to Auto, I need to get anotherone since I sold the other one

NO, that's not the reason. My dad put it on that way, and I was like what are you doing. He said that's how they use to do it in the day, I was like ok, actually it fits your hand better at that angle. Plus I think it looks better.

I find the 45 degree angle on the T-handle easier to use than if it were straight. And I chose not to install the relay, and have had no problems w/o it... but there's one code in the computer (not sure which # it is) that I think is caused by not having the relay installed. However, the code doesn't trip the check engine light and doesn't seem to even matter . Good luck and I think you'll like the shifter.

P.S. does anybody notice when you downshift it rocks the top of the console? That's the only downside of the shifter I've found so far--its hard to downshift and loosens up the screws a lot. (not so bad because you don't need to downshift in a 1/4 mile race..)
